What Should I Do After Seeing This In The Bible That Made Me Cry?

My parents are atheist, they never believed in religion, or the Bible. I only became a Christian when I left my parent’s house to live with my aunt in Lagos. My aunt on the other hand, is a devoted Christian. She does not miss any Sunday service. In fact, she made to love the Bible, and I became a born again Christian afterwards. But there was something I saw in the Bible that made me cry.

One faithful day, I was reading and skimming through the Bible in search of New verses that can improve my spiritual life. All of a sudden, I encountered a particular verse in the Bible that made me cry. I almost lost my faith, and I’m still wondering whether to stop going to church as a woman. This is the passage I saw, 1 Corinthians 15 from 34-35.

The Bible is a Christian holy book. It was used many years ago, and luckily, it has gained momentum all over the world. People read the Bible every day just to know more about God, while some read the Bible in other to improve their spiritual lives. There are still some things in the Bible you will read and have doubts, some will even make you shed tears.

From my point of view, here are what I understand from that Bible verse.

1. Women may not be needed in meetings.

Women are also human beings, and they should be allowed to be in any meeting, or place. They should be allowed to speak their minds, because we also have opinions too. We do not need our husbands to speak for us. If you understand what that passage in the Bible was trying to convey, please kindly let us know on the comment section.

2. Women should not speak in the house of God.

I’m really confused about all this. Like I said earlier, I and my aunt are devoted Christians, and we also love the Bible. Is their any reason we should not speak in church?

3. Women should allow their husbands to speak for them.

Since we are not allowed to speak in the house of God, we should allow our husbands to speak for us. The thing is I do not have a husband, so what should I do?

If I may ask, why are some women not only speaking in our Churches today, but administering, preaching and leading men in it?

Are those so called men of God aware of this provision in the Bible, while they allow women to be vocal in the Church?

Hadith of The Day: Kindness To Parents

Abu Hurayrah reported: that a man came to the prophet and asked, ”O messenger of Allah, who is most entitled to good companionship from me?” the prophet replied: ”Your mother”. The man said. “Who is next?” The Prophet said, “Your mother.” The man further said, “Who is next?” The Prophet said, “Your mother.” The man asked for the fourth time, “Who is next?” The Prophet said, “Your father. “
(Related by Muslim and al-Bukhari)

Abu Hurayrah also narrated that the prophet said: ”Rubbed in dust is the nose, Rubbed in dust is the nose, Rubbed in dust is the nose of him {meaning, ‘Shame and disgrace on him’} who is alive when one or both of his parents reach old age – and who then fails to enter paradise {by serving them and showing them kindness and compassion}”.

NBA Update: Nasir El-Rufai Has Never Been Associated With Bigotry – HRH Sanusi

The former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sunusi II has also lent his voice to the Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai’s saga with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), where he was quoted to have said:

“If you have an opinion, people will either agree or disagree with you. But a man who has an opinion that can be agreed with or disagreed with is always better than a man who has no opinion at all.

“Nasir has always had opinions. He knows what his position is on things. He says that position very clearly. People will like it, some people will not like it. And that is what people call being controversial, being controversial is actually having an opinion. If you don’t want to be controversial, you just behave like these teflons, flexible, just flow with the wind and nobody knows where you stand…

“I think the case of the crisis in Kaduna, first of all is something that predates this government. It has been on for a long time. And the governor is doing something about it. The North as a whole suffers because we have people who profit from division. We have divided ourselves against each other, whether it is ethnicity of religion.

“And when you have someone who says I am simply going to stand for justice, for the rights of human beings and doing what is right, some people who are not used to things being done in that way are going to object. I am sure that His Excellency knows that with every single issue, there will be people who will object.

“I read the petition. I was looking for the specific allegation. You said somebody does not respect the rule of law, what is the specific instance of disrespect for the rule of law. You say somebody has mishandled a crisis. What is the specific manner in which he mishandled the crisis?

“If you going to take action on people based on allegations, the President of the NBA himself has allegations against him that have not been proven, but nobody has said anything about him because it this is a matter that is before a court of law, and people will wait for the court to decide because everybody has a right to fair hearing.

“More important for me, if you feel that the governor of Kaduna State is not doing well, you should invite him to your conference and ask him and let him explain what he is doing and tell him what you think he is doing wrong. You will learn something from him, he will learn something from him. Disinviting him is not the path of people who actually want progress. Because if you disagree with someone , having him in your hall where you can tell him your view is the best way and he can defend himself. And if there are things he needs to improve he will take them on board. And if there are things that you don’t know that he is doing, you can be better informed. That is the best way to handle issues like this.

“I hope that this matter will not be turned into a religious and ethnic matter. It should be a matter of principle. I think it is their loss because if he was there he would add value to the conference and they would learn something about what he is doing.

“It is sad for the NBA itself and it is sad for freedom of speech, and also fair
hearing.

“I have known Nasir since we were 16/17. He is a nationalist. He has never been associated with any ethnic or religious bigotry. All our friends are Nigerians. People don’t even think of us as northerners because really we are just Nigerians.

“Anybody who knows him will tell you that he is just a Nigerian. Look at the people that he works with, look at the people around him, look at his friends. He has not surrounded himself with people from a particular ethnic group or a particular religious persuasion. He has friends all over, pastors, reverends, imams. It is is sad that anybody can accuse him in any way of being partisan in the matter.

One of the lawyers made a comment and I think it is something that we should bear in mind. He is a governor in charge of lives and property in the state. He is the number one person concerned with peace in Kaduna because if there is no peace, he is responsible. You can’t have people crying more than the bereaved. If we do not assist him, the least we can do is pray for him, and give him a chance and advice him.”

“Needless to say, this is a sad thing. I am his friend, but His Excellency is wrong, I will say it. If I am wrong, he will say it and we would still be friends. But on this matter, it does more to the discredit of the NBA. This is one less speaking engagement.

The most important thing that Kaduna State should have peace. We should not complicate efforts at peace-building. I read today that the groups are meeting and I hope and pray that they will reach a compromise and we will see peace in the state. That is the most important thing, not speaking at NBA or what NBA says, but that there should be peace in Kaduna State and in this country.” He concluded.

The Story: Uncle Steven Goes To Mosque Every Friday To Organise Worshippers’ Shoes

The Story feature Uncle Steven today because of his little but huge act of religious tolerance, though the story happened about five months back or thereabouts in Singapore, but it possess huge lessons on how our people need to view themselves in the light of religion.

The story reads:

A non-Muslim man, known as ‘Uncle Steven,’ has been spotted outside Al-Mawaddah Mosque in Singapore neatly organising worshippers’ shoes into rows.

He was stopped by Irfan Musthapa, who highlighted the incident on Facebook.

Mustapha said he sees the man every week at the Mosque doing the same thing.

“Braving the blazing sun, plus some haze today, on his bare feet atop heated concrete, soaking wet clothes, hundreds of curious stares, he squats from slipper to slipper, arranging them for easy retrieval after prayer,” Mustapha wrote.

When asked why he does it, Uncle Steven’s response was simple:

“Oh, looks neater.”

He says he tries to come every Friday and that he lives nearby.

Mustapha said that he was touched and inspired by Uncle Steven’s gesture

“Noticing Uncle Steven, I can’t help but admire his actions in front of and for a people of different faith,” Mustapha wrote.

He added: “Diversity transcends boundaries and Uncle Steven is testament of that.

“It’s the littlest of deeds that matter and I’m sure there’s something we can appreciate, honour and perhaps replicate from Uncle Steven, for each other…”

Hadith of The Day: The Need To Recite Fatiha

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (ﷺ), who said: A prayer performed by someone who has not recited the Essence of the Quran (1) during it is deficient (and he repeated the word three times), incomplete. Someone said to Abu Hurayrah: [Even though] we are behind the imam? (2) He said: Recite it to yourself, for I have heard the Prophet (may the blessings and peace of Allah be up on him) say: Allah (mighty and sublime be He), had said: I have divided prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves, and My servant shall have what he has asked for. When the servant says: Al-hamdu lillahi rabbi l-alamin (3), Allah (mighty and sublime be He) says: My servant has praised Me. And when he says: Ar-rahmani r-rahim (4), Allah (mighty and sublime be He) says: My servant has extolled Me, and when he says: Maliki yawmi d-din (5), Allah says: My servant has glorified Me – and on one occasion He said: My servant has submitted to My power. And when he says: Iyyaka na budu wa iyyaka nasta in (6), He says: This is between Me and My servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for. And when he says: Ihdina s-sirata l- mustaqim, siratal ladhina an amta alayhim ghayril-maghdubi alayhim wa la d-dallin (7), He says: This is for My servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for. (1) Surat al-Fatihah, the first surah (chapter) of the Qur’an. (2) i.e. standing behind the imam (leader) listening to him reciting al-Fatihah. (3) “Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.” (4) “The Merciful, the Compassionate”. (5) “Master of the Day of Judgement”. (6) “It is You we worship and it is You we ask for help”. (7) “Guide us to the straight path, the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favors, not of those against whom You are angry, nor of those who are astray”. It was related by Muslim (also by Malik, at-Tirmidhi, Abu-Dawud, an-Nasa’i and Ibn Majah).

The Pulpit: Are Religious Sisters Happy People?

Miss Debbie a young lady in her early twenties proves virtuous in her demeanor and external appearance. Her consistency and regular attendance at parish masses, programmes and meetings gave her the title Saint Debbie.

Daily and daily her popularity grew in St. Humbert Parish, Nikoti. All and sundry as far they were parishioners of her faith community wanted to be associated with her.

I miraculously saw Saint Debbie as she was called; in a Legion Function tagged Annual General Reunion (AGR), so having heard a lot about her and her wonderful and virtuous lifestyle I thought it a good thing to say hello and perhaps hear from the saint herself so I could at least be inspired in my own little way to serve God more devoutly.

After the meeting I met Debbie and exchange of pleasantries took place and then we went into discussions about the spiritual life and its struggles and rewards. From all indication, Debbie was good at discussions of this nature and her wisdom and knowledge about the church, the saints and true catholic spirituality greatly impressed me.

As the discussion grew hotter, other legionaries joined in the interaction and before we knew it, it was as though a symposium was taking place only for us to realize later that all those we were waiting and enjoying the discussion were all waiting for the vehicle that is suppose to convey them to their destinations. So it was a good time to waste in learning new things.

Just towards the end of our discussion, I asked to know if Debbie would be interested in becoming a Religious Sister and to no one’s surprise she simply answered in the affirmative. Immediately after she answered this question a young lady and a woman started yelling out loud; ” why you want go become sister self? You no go born ooo, you no go marry, infact, you no go enjoy life oooo. aunty please don’t go, you will be sad all your life.” Everywhere was now still only for the vehicle they were all waiting to show up and the assembly called up suddenly.

My answer to Debbie was simple; if you pray, discern and feel this call to religious life kindly respond by going, please don’t mind them. She thanked me and we parted ways.

On my way home I began thinking about the words of that young lady and the woman to Debbie. Although harsh and raw; could those words be true? I thought!!!!

Could it be true that the religious life is not a happy life??

Upon further research and experience it dawned on me that although a tough and serious life, the religious life is a happy, happier and happiest way of life for those who have been called by God and have responded whole hearted to this call to live in poverty, chastity and obedience.

By why should a religious sister be happy when its obvious the life is a serious one and almost without fun…

A religious sister is happy because of one thing… Love. She is happy because she has discovered her lover and has given herself to love him completely. She is happy because life with her lover is true fun. She is happy because in loving her lover she extends the same love to all men and women in the service to renders to the world and the church. She is happy because babe loves and only in love is true happiness found.

Thus, whether she is playing football, watching the T.V., playing cards, going shopping and having fun; a religious is doing all these with the love of God in her heart.

A sister shares here experience thus; “I left home at the age of 15 to follow my dream and for 45 years I have been living it out. When I chose to be a religious sister I was not scared because I knew that God who loves me was calling me. I have enjoyed and love being in the convent and living with the sisters. Although I missed my family very much but I loved God so much that I know this is what I am called to do.

She goes on describing her experiences thus; “My journey has afforded with me with many opportunities to be with God’s people through teaching and administration; being a sister has given me the opportunity to meet many types of people and learn from them. It doesn’t seem possible that I have been a sister for 45 years… it sounds long and old, but I feel young and I’m thankful and grateful for my life and for all the people who have been part of it. I thank God; am happy.”

Little wonder Pope Francis while addressing a group of religious sisters charged them to live out their vocation of joy saying, “Dear sisters, be always joyful, and even noisy!” and witness everywhere the beauty of your consecration to God and to the Gospel…”.

While we may sometimes think that a Sister’s life is lonely and joyless, perhaps because of what we see and other exceptions experience; research has shown that the most happiest people on earth are those dedicated to the service of God and humanity.

What other joy, what other peace, what other love does one seek or need that a sister does not possess in abundance?

St. Augustine gave an answer to this when he said; to fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek him the greatest adventure; to find him, the greatest human achievement.

Indeed the life of a Religious sister is a happy one.

Hadith of The Day: Supplications To Allah

Book , Number 6471:

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, thus stated : I am near to the thought of My servant as he thinks about Me, and I am with him as he remembers Me. And if he remembers Me in his heart, I also remember him in My Heart, and if he remembers Me in assembly I remember him in assembly, better than his (remembrance), and if he draws near Me by the span of a palm, I draw near him by the cubit, and if he draws near Me by the cubit I draw near him by the space (covered by) two hands. And if he walks towards Me, I rush towards him.

Book 35, Number 6472:

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of A’mash with the same chain of transmitters, but there is no mention of these words: “He draws near Me by the space of a hand, I draw near him by the space (covered) by two hands.”

Book 35, Number 6473:

Hammam b. Munabbih reported so many ahadith from Abu Huraira and one out of them is this that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said that Allah thus stated: When My servant draws close to me by the span of a palm, I draw close to him by the space of a cubit, and when he draws close to Me by the space of a cubit, I draw close to him by the space (covered) by two hands, and when he draws close to Me by the space (covered by) two hands, I go in hurry towards him.

Book 35, Number 6474:

Abu Huraira reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) was travelling along the path leading to Mecca that he happened to pass by a mountain called Jumdan. He said: Proceed on, it is Jumdan, Mufarradun have gone ahead. They (the Companions of the Holy Prophet) said: Allah’s Messenger, who are Mufarradun? He said: They are those males and females who remember Allah much.
